Saint Charlie Resorts Announces 2027 Flagship Opening in Riviera Maya, Mexico

Playa del Carmen, Mexico, Sept. 14, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Saint Charlie Resorts announced today that its flagship property in the Riviera Maya, Mexico, will begin welcoming guests in 2027, introducing a resort concept specifically designed for families with members who have special needs or disabilities.

Some resorts have made important strides in physical accessibility, while others have developed dedicated autism support. Saint Charlie Resorts builds on that progress with a coordinated family experience designed to welcome, celebrate, and support medically stable guests across a broad spectrum of developmental, sensory, cognitive, and physical needs. This includes guests with autism, Down syndrome, or cerebral palsy; wheelchair users; and guests with hearing or visual impairments.

Founded by Charles “Dr. Charlie” Powell, M.D., and named after his son, “Little Charlie,” the resort is designed to help families prepare before arrival, navigate the property with confidence, participate in activities suited to individual abilities, and enjoy time together.

Communication differences, sensory needs, mobility requirements, and dietary restrictions can make family travel difficult. In a survey of 1,000 parents of autistic children cited by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards, 87% said they did not take family vacations—a gap Saint Charlie Resorts aims to address.

The resort brings five commitments into one coordinated stay: pre-arrival planning, structured safety procedures, specially trained staff, adapted activities, and opportunities for parents and siblings to rest. A dedicated guardian and family concierge role provides extended blocks of one-on-one guest support so other family members can relax. The role provides hospitality support, not clinical care or legal guardianship, with clear boundaries and supervisor oversight.

“The whole idea is that families should not have to lower their expectations for what a vacation can be simply because someone they love has special needs,” said Dr. Charlie. “We are building a place where families are expected, understood, and welcomed, and where participation and family time are designed into the experience from the beginning.”

The flagship property is being developed through the renovation of an existing resort in the Riviera Maya, with additional sites under consideration across the Caribbean and Latin America.
